Full redesign and transformation of a garden – Landscaping Cambridge
Full redesign and transformation of a side and rear garden around a new extension
Our client envisaged a total redesign of their garden and used our skilled designer to provide ideas and draw up their desired plan in 2D and 3D allowing them to visualise how it would look when completed. Our expert landscaping team then set to work to bring this design to life and this stunning project has been completed in time for this summer.
We brought in the necessary machinery and completely cleared the site of old paving, grass, and unwanted planting. The area was then levelled and marked out with string lines and laser levels ready for the construction of the design and drainage was added where required.
The foundations were prepared for the patio and paths, and king size Eclipse Silver Outdoor Porcelain paving stones from Royale Stone were laid and pointed with grey exterior grout. The light colour of the porcelain which reflects the light, and the large size of the paving stones made the area immediately look brighter and larger. This paving was also used along the side path and as staggered steppingstones interspersed with aggregate, breaking up the straight lines of the path. Porcelain is fairly stain resistant and is an excellent choice for paths and patio areas.
Granite stone setts were used along the side of the steppingstones and also to create a lovely feature path around the edge of the new extension.
A shed base was constructed to take the shed which was then repositioned with further porcelain paving laid along the front.
Decorative shingle was chosen to intersperse with the steppingstones plus for an area around the raised beds, contrasting with the pale porcelain. The shingle was laid on a prepared compacted base with a membrane to help prevent subsidence and weed growth.

3 steel raised beds were erected which were filled with good quality topsoil and a compost mix ready for planting. A mixture of shrubs, perennials and herbaceous planting was chosen for the beds which included some grasses and plants which would provide all year-round interest as well as flowers. A beautiful olive tree was chosen as the central focal point for one of the raised beds. After planting a bark mulch was applied to the beds.
This gives a smart finish and also helps retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Low hedging was used to separate the courtyard from the seating area and also between the seating area and the lawn.
One wall was planted with beautiful rambling roses which will look stunning all summer and break up the area of wall.
Horizontal slat fencing was chosen to clad over some existing fencing and to provide a hideaway for the bins. This always looks attractive and is quick way of changing the look of a tired fence if still structurally sound.

The new lawn was laid to turf, which provides an almost instant lawn.
An artificial green wall panel was attached to the side wall of the new extension, and this will provide colour all year round.
This redesign has totally transformed the whole of the rear and side garden into a relaxing stunning area and provides an attractive view and exit from the patio doors. Lighting has finished off the transformation around the garden after dark and there are some low-level lights on the corners of the patio. The various contrasting materials break up the area and provide different zones and the raised beds add a different level and combine to provide an inviting garden with the patio providing space for alfresco dining. Completed over the winter this garden is ready to go for the summer!
