Patio, fishpond and sunken garden building in Cambridge

This was a multi-faceted project which we were proud to carry out, incorporating innovative, green design using a living green roof and carefully coordinated throughout by using mainly Cedar wood.

In consultation with our designer, our client’s dream became a plan for a patio/seating area with a building at the rear of the property reached by means of attractive paving and a little arched wooden bridge over a sunken fish pond, further enhanced by a fountain and remotely controlled underwater lights.

The new sunken garden building negated the issue of height or overlooking of neighbours properties and could be used as a gym, studio, home office or for housing a hot tub. Built at the far end of the property it included a pump station for drainage and outbuilding facilities. The building was clad with cedar, with a green roof and completed with a self-cleaning roof light. A bespoke space saving pocket door was constructed using the same cedar cladding and it slides neatly away within the wall when open. The use of natural products and the green roof helped the building blend into the garden and produce an attractive and interesting, plus useful addition, which appears non-intrusive in a garden setting.

A living green roof

A living green roof has numerous benefits, not least the aesthetic aspect, but it also provides a natural habitat for various insects and birds, and gives reduced water run-off, improved insulation and increased sound proofing.

The attractive spacious patio area and paved path to the pond with steps down to outbuilding were achieved by using Primaporcelain, Bodmin Anthracite paving with the ground carefully excavated and compacted prior to installation.

Raised planters were constructed and combined with Cedar benches to enhance the patio area, and provide year round seating and interest. These were also similarly treated for protection and planted with mainly evergreens such as Yuccas and Cordylines.

Sunken fish pond

The feature sunken fish pond was constructed from dense concrete blocks which were rendered and then painted using a liquid liner and colour. A cabinet was built to house the pump and filters for the pond, and these were installed and connected along with the fountain and underwater lighting, which looks stunning at night.

An attractive, raised footbridge over the pond was constructed from Meranti hardwood which was then treated and oiled for long lasting protection. Complete with railings it makes not only a decorative but functional way to reach the garden building and together with the fish pond and fountain provides an interesting focal point for the garden.

Garden lighting

Garden lighting was installed throughout the area with recessed floor lights along the entrance and around the paving area, LED strip lights provide lighting under the benches with Spike lights arranged in the flower beds highlighting the planting and of course the remotely controlled underwater lights, illuminating the pond.

This project transformed a small garden into an utter delight by day and night with year round interest, an extra room, attractive space for alfresco dining and relaxation and a sunken fish pond with fountain and bridge for added pleasure.
